Name: Steven McGeown

Job Title: Massage Therapist and Personal Trainer

Asphalt Green Department: Fitness

Asphalt Green Campus: Upper East Side

Q: How long have you been working at Asphalt Green?

A: Three years.

Q: What does your job entail?

A: As a massage therapist, I use massage techniques to help clients rehabilitate injuries, reduce pain, relax muscles, reduce stress and promote overall health and wellness. As a personal trainer, I work with my clients to increase strength, endurance, flexibility and cardio fitness. My goal is to help clients get results from their training and to realize the benefits of exercise and a healthy lifestyle.

Q: How did you get into the fitness industry?

A: After working for 20 years in the graphic communication industry, I decided to put people before profit and I left the corporate world to pursue my passion of helping others find health through massage and fitness. I became a licensed massage therapist in 2000 and a certified personal trainer in 2011. Since then, I’ve worked in medical offices, gyms and special events. I also volunteered as a massage therapist for individuals who worked on clean-up after 9/11 and Hurricane Sandy.

Q: What is one of your fondest memories of working at Asphalt Green?

A: My fondest memory was breaking a Guinness World Record with 312 Asphalt Green members and staff for the most people using an Urban Rebounder (or trampoline) at the same time on our outdoor field!

Q: What is your favorite exercise?

A: Hard choice! One of my favorites is the Turkish Getup because this one exercise challenges all muscle groups while also improving coordination and movement.

Q: What is one of your favorite fitness tips?

A: Don’t let the gym be the only place you practice being fit. Be creative and find time to integrate exercise and stretching into everyday activities. For example, take a stretch break during your work day, use the stairs instead of the elevator or walk briskly from the parking lot to your destination.

Q: Can you share a fun fact about yourself?

A: I once came eye to eye with a bear in the woods and walked away without a scratch!
