Sports can help children learn leadership, teamwork, self-esteem and confidence. In New York City, children from low-income neighborhoods have limited access to organized sports and exercise. Asphalt Green is working to change that with our Community Sports Leagues.

In 2009, we started Community Sports Leagues to provide middle school children with the opportunity to play organized sports like flag football, basketball and soccer as part of a school team. Today, our Community Sports Leagues have grown to serve more than 720 middle school students from 19 New York City public schools and charter schools. Through team sports, our players learn important life skills, such as sportsmanship, responsibility and healthy exercise habits.

Our Community Sports Leagues are available for both girls and boys throughout the school year. Leagues run during fall, winter and spring term:

  • FLAG FOOTBALL LEAGUE: Held during the fall at Asphalt Green’s Upper East Side campus, our coed flag football league is proudly sponsored by PepsiCo.
  • BASKETBALL LEAGUE: Winter is a great time to keep active indoors. Sponsored by The Harris Family Charitable Foundation, our boys and girls basketball teams hold games in Harlem gymnasiums.
  • SOCCER LEAGUE: Spring arrives with outdoor soccer! Our boys and girls soccer teams play games at Asphalt Green’s Upper East Side campus.

Community Sports Leagues are possible through partnerships with public and charter schools along with the support of generous sponsors. Participating schools are responsible for recruiting players and teachers to coach their teams. Asphalt Green administers the league, provides free player uniforms, professional referees and instructional clinics with Asphalt Green coaches. Trophies are also awarded at the end of the season during an award celebration.
