Speed Ball
Who: Grades 3-5
Players: 30+
Time: 20 minutes+
Where: Playground or gym
Equipment: Four cones and one soccer ball
How to Play
- Divide the students into two teams and set up goals at opposite ends of the play area.
- The game starts with a jump ball (like in basketball), and players first throw the ball to move it across the field.
- If a player is holding the ball, they can take up to three steps before shooting or passing it.
- If the ball touches the ground, the game switches to soccer, and players must kick the ball instead of throwing it.
- Teams score a point by either kicking or throwing the ball through the opponent's goal.
Check for Understanding
- How do you score in Speed Ball?
- What happens when the ball touches the ground?
Game Tip
- Demonstrate how to score before starting the game to clarify the goal-scoring rules for the players.
Conflict-Resolution Tip
- If there is a dispute, have students resolve it with a quick game of Rock-Paper-Scissors.
Outdoor Tip
- Create smaller teams of five and rotate them after one team scores three points.
Play
- Easy: Players can only use one hand to throw or catch the ball.
- Medium: Have students move using a crab-walk position.
- Hard: Set a 2-3 minute time limit per round to increase intensity.
