Chief Operating Officer

Asphalt Green is a 50-year-old New York City institution providing fitness, community, wellness, and sports for thousands of New Yorkers across multiple generations. We have trained Olympians and national swimmers and athletes of every background and ability, and we have given away $40 million worth of free swim lessons to children. Every day, we bring neighbors together, make them healthier, develop as people, and help them live longer. We have emerged from the pandemic exceeding pre-Covid revenue, a strong endowment, and a new Chief Executive Officer, Chief Development Officer, and Chief Marketing Officer who have eyes on expanding the organization's reach. We are looking to hire a Chief Operating Officer who will be a key partner in helping achieve this future growth.

 

Job Summary:

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) will play an integral role in shaping further strategy and expansion of Asphalt Green. The COO will play a role in our future real estate and facilities strategy. The COO should be a master at relationship-building, building institutions, motivating staff, and establishing a healthy culture of accountability and collaboration in workspaces. The COO is expected to be highly organized, detail-oriented, and thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced work environment.

The COO must be a skilled communicator, effective leader, and driven businessperson who can spur company growth, maintain key operational procedures, create new processes, and ensure day-to-day operational excellence. This individual will be instrumental in customer interactions and customer relationships.

 
Reporting Relationships:

The Chief Operating Officer will report to the Chief Executive Officer and will serve on the Executive Team.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Strategy, Capital Planning, Real Estate, and Future Growth
    • Work alongside the executive team and under the CEO's leadership to develop, execute, and monitor operations strategy in support of the organization's overall business plan and strategic direction.
    • Along with executives and Board members, oversee the potential acquisition of new real estate and developments.
    • Cultivate and steward relationships with local elected officials and City agencies.
    • Manage existing real estate and develop capital plans for future growth and maintenance.
    • Identify, recommend, and implement new processes, technologies, equipment, and systems to improve and streamline organizational processes and use of resources.
  • Operations and Facilities
    • Working closely with the Director of Facilities and the Director of Operations, assess the current state of both sites including buildings and mechanicals. Create a long-term plan for essential equipment supporting our pools. Review vendor relationships and contracts.
    • Ensure the company maintains a safe, efficient, and clean facility.
  • Customer Experience
    • Oversee customer experience as well as methods and procedures for delivering best-in-class hospitality.
  • Technology
    • Oversee the technology department. Analyze the current technology infrastructure and identify the next level of information technology and systems that support programs' growth and the organizations overall.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range for this position is $210,000 to $235,000 annually. Asphalt Green offers a comprehensive benefits package. It also encourages its team to take advantage of Asphalt Green's expertise and its facilities.

 

Location:

This position is located in New York City. Asphalt Green's flagship locations are on the Upper East Side and Battery Park City in lower Manhattan, and we run programs in scores of schools and parks throughout the city.

 

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required for this position, as is at least seven years of relevant experience in roles with increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Demonstrate sound business judgment, strong decision-making, and critical thinking skills, superior written and verbal communication, strong emotional intelligence, and conflict-resolution skills.
