This 2014-2015 school year, Asphalt Green’s Waterproofing program has expanded to more locations across the city allowing us to serve more New York City children. Waterproofing is our free community program where we teach seven and eight year old students how to swim. This year, we have gone from working with 39 elementary schools to 42 schools. During this year’s program, we plan to teach more than 2,500 kids to swim!

Waterproofing will take place at Asphalt Green’s Upper East Side and Battery Park City campuses, as well as P.S. 125, The Dunlevy Milbank Center, The New Settlement Community Center, and the new site for this year Harlem Village Academy.

At the start of Waterproofing class, all students will go through a skill assessment and be placed in groups according to skills. Our instructors will teach kids swim fundamentals starting with blowing bubbles and pool safety to submersion, front float, back float, flutter kicks, treading water and swim strokes like freestyle and backstroke.

Our goal at the end of Waterproofing is for each child to be able to swim 20 yards in deep water, what we like to call ‘Waterproofed.’
