Name: Joseph Torres

Job Title: Deck coordinator, swim instructor, head lifeguard

Asphalt Green Department: Aquatics

Asphalt Green Campus: Battery Park City

Q: How long have you been working at Asphalt Green?

A: I’ve been working at Asphalt Green since the Battery Park City facility opened, so it’s been about three years.

Q: What are some of your responsibilities?

A: I work with the Swim School as a deck coordinator, swim instructor, and as an instructor for Asphalt Green’s free learn-to-swim Waterproofing program. I am also a head lifeguard.

Q: What is your favorite aspect of working at Asphalt Green?

A: My coworkers are awesome, but the most rewarding aspect of this job is teaching people a life skill. I love watching students progress and develop and understand swimming.

Q: When did you start swimming?

A: I started swimming eight years ago.

Q: How did you get into the aquatics industry?

A: I originally got a summer lifeguarding job. I learned to love the pool then and haven’t left since.

Q: Do you play any other sports?

A: I don’t play competitively, but I enjoy playing all sports. Recently, I started playing basketball with friends and running in the park.

Q: Who is your favorite athlete? Why?

A: I don't really have one particular athlete that is my favorite, but Michael Phelps is someone I follow and admire for his career accomplishments. We share the same sport, and he exemplifies the reward of hard work, dedication, and commitment. He has accomplished so much and is decorated as the world’s most prolific Olympian of all time.

Q: Who inspires you?

A: My parents inspire me because they exemplify hard work and provide constant encouragement and support. They really inspire me to be the best person that I can be.

Q: What is the best swim tip you’ve received or favorite tip to share with players?

A: The best swim tip I've received: just RELAX. Our team of instructors has embraced this tip. Learning how to swim can be a long process; it’s easier if you’re relaxed and open to learning. Patience, confidence, and dedication are all you really need to learn.

Q: What is your favorite quote?

A: “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard."

Q: What is a fun fact about Joseph?

A: I'm originally from El Paso, Texas. I also have a twin sister.
