It’s a win for recess! Each year, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene recognizes elementary schools that take action to create a healthier environment for their students. Of the 61 schools honored, 20 schools participate in our Recess Enhancement Program (REP).

On June 3, Commissioner of Health Mary Bassett and Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer presented the Excellence in School Wellness Award. The award consists of four categories: physical education, physical activity, nutrition, and wellness coordination. REP, which provides organized recess to schools in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx, is integral to the physical activity component.

Four of the five schools that received the highest honor, Platinum, participate in REP. Platinum-level schools must meet all criteria in each category.

Congratulations to our schools for making huge strides in building a healthier community! We believe in the power of play and will continue to provide students the foundation to be healthy and fit for a lifetime.
