pools

Asphalt Green’s 50-meter, Olympic-sized pool at its Upper East Side campus and 25-yard lap pool at its Battery Park City campus are two of New York City’s most beloved places to swim. We rely on the support of our community to ensure our pools remain in top condition all year long.

Pool Policies

  • We’re on the Same Team: Running, pushing, rough play, or abusive language is not tolerated. Be a good teammate by showing kindness to fellow members, staff, and guests.
  • No Lifeguard, No Swimming: Swimming is prohibited unless a lifeguard is on duty.
  • Wash Up Before You Jump In: A clean pool is the best kind of pool. All swimmers must shower with soap and remove all makeup and bandages before entering the pool.
  • Synchronize your Swim: Circle swimming is required if three or more people choose to swim in a lane. The lane may split if there are fewer than three people. Always communicate with other swimmers when joining a lane.
  • Do We Really Need to Say It? You must wear a swimsuit to enter the pool. Swimmers with hair past their chin must wear a swim cap.
  • Save the Sneakers for the Court: Only deck shoes are allowed on the pool deck. Shoe covers are available at locker room entrances.
  • Keep Germs Away: For safety reasons, those with inflamed eyes, nasal or ear discharge, boils or open sores, or other evident skin or bodily infections are not allowed in the pool. Urination, discharge of fecal matter, expectoration, and blowing your nose in the pool are prohibited.
  • Little Swimmers Dress Code: Children not toilet-trained or ages 4 and under must wear non-disposable, rubberized pool diapers that fit tightly around their legs in addition to regular, disposable water diapers.
  • Lunch Can Wait: Food, beverages, gum chewing, and glass items are not permitted.
  • You’re Not at The Olympics… Yet: Diving is prohibited. Feet-first entry only.
  • Don’t Show Off: Holding your breath repetitively or for a prolonged period can be deadly. Intentional hyperventilation, extended breath-holding training, and underwater breath-holding competitions are prohibited.
  • Age Requirements: Member lap swim and recreational swim are open to adults and children 13 and older. Children ages 13–17 must pass a swim test before participating in lap and recreational swim.

LAP SWIM ETIQUETTE

Circle swimming is required if three or more people wish to swim in a lane.

  • The lane may split if there are fewer than three people.
  • Always communicate with other swimmers when joining a lane.

Before entering the pool:

  • Make note of the fast, medium, and slow lane designations.
  • Select a lane with swimmers moving as closely as possible to your pace.

When passing swimmers:

  • Do not pass if you are barely able to hold the pace of the swimmer in front of you.
  • Do not attempt to swim wide past a slower swimmer.
  • Gently tap the feet of the swimmer in front of you
  • Only pass at the wall.

All swimmers should:

  • Carefully check for the position and speed of other swimmers before entering a lane.

When being passed by another swimmer:

  • If you feel a touch on your feet, continue to the next wall and then stop in the right corner to let the faster swimmer pass.
  • Do not attempt to speed up when tagged.
  • Once tagged, do not stop in the middle of the pool or swim beyond the next wall.
